The Ontario Funeral Service Association (OFSA) maintains a high standard of efficient service among our members in the interests of public welfare. OFSA strives to increase public awareness of the funeral profession as well as consumer protection through its lobbying efforts.
Who belongs to OFSA?
OFSA was formed in 1883. It was originally called the Embalmers' Association. In 1922, the association was incorporated as the Ontario Funeral Service Association. OFSA is a voluntary professional association of funeral directors with members throughout Ontario.
After effectively representing the funeral profession in Ontario for over 120 years, we responded to the needs of our Independent members and the New OFSA now represents only the Independently Owned Funeral Establishments. OFSA provides education, training and marketing support to give our members the competitive advantage, and protection for their business through our successful lobbying efforts.
The association is wholly funded by its membership. Apply for OFSA membership.
The Association relies on every member to contribute to its committees. Your feedback and suggestions are needed and welcomed. As a valued OFSA member, we urge you to consider volunteering your time and talents on one or more of our committees. Due to the government relations focus the Legislative, Labour Relations, and Environment Committees have been merged into one.
This committee lobbies and networks with the government on behalf of OFSA members. It keeps OFSA members informed of changes to the Funeral Directors and Establishments Act, 1991 and liases with the offices of the Chief Coroner of Ontario, the Public Trustee, the Registrar General, the Minister of Government Relations and Ministry of the Environment. The committee lobbies the government on behalf of the profession, and informs OFSA members of changes to legislation, environmental issues, etc. that may affect the funeral service industry.
This committee oversees new projects and on-going events. In particular, it works with the OFSA staff to plan the Association's Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Mid Year Meeting. The committee is responsible for selecting the location, theme and activities for the AGM. Activities include workshops and seminars for OFSA members, and social activities for attendees and their spouses.
This committee liases with representatives from Humber College (Etobicoke) and Boreal College (Sudbury). Its goal is to enhance the proactive, constructive relationship between OFSA and the province's funeral service education programs. The committee monitors funeral service education programs, solicits feedback on education issues from students, instructors and administrators, and provides input on curriculum and related issues to the colleges.
Finance and Insurance
Due to its budgetary impact and implications the Insurance portfolio has been merged with Finance.
The Finance Committee oversees OFSA's budget and financial activities. Each year, the Treasurer prepares financial statements for the Annual Report. The committee fixes budgets for all OFSA committees and functions. The Finance Committee liases with OFSA's auditors and is responsible for maintaining the Association's investments.
The committee oversees OFSA's insurance and benefits packages for members/member firms. Member firms have access to a group benefit package which provides medical, dental, life and disability insurance. Individual members can take advantage of life insurance, a pension plan, and group home and auto insurance. Group RRSP's and a group commercial package are also available. Suggestions can be made to the committee.
Membership and Benefits
The Membership and Benefits Committee mandate is to enhance and promote membership in OFSA. The committee oversees member services and benefits. Benefits include the legal assistance plan, discount programs at Petro Canada, Bell Mobility & Telus packages, plus many others and financial assistance for conference presenters. The committee solicits and responds to member feedback and suggestions.
Communication and Public Awareness
Again two committees have been merged. The Public Awareness committee mandate or objective is to market the profession to the public (this includes reviewing pamphlets etc). Communications is a fairly new committee and the responsibilities assigned include the Newsletter/website content and links and all written marketing communications (publications, ads). This new committee addresses all the Association's communications. Its responsibilities include public relations campaigns, brochures, OFSA's World Wide Web site, and a speakers' bureau. The goal of this Committee is to enhance and protect the public image of the funeral director and the funeral service profession and to also communicate information to the membership and the public.
OFSA Resource Team
The purpose of this committee is to bring key funeral directors from around the province to support independent colleagues in need through a crisis or just for information.

Why volunteer to serve on an OFSA committee? Here are just a few reasons:
